Benefits of Motorcycle Chains Speed

Jun. 23, 2021

Motorcycles are either shaft-driven or chain-driven. Chain-driven motorcycles use a chain and sprocket mechanism to transmit power. If you ride a motorcycle, you want to use the best motorcycle chain on the market to balance performance and safety. This buying guide can help you make an informed decision about the best motorcycle chains.

Benefits of Motorcycle Chains

  • Speed. A quality motorcycle chain is designed for sudden acceleration and braking, two factors commonly found in racing and off-road bikes.

  • Efficiency. Basic chains have high tensile strength and are designed to handle heavy loads. A bike with a very good chain can handle up to 8,000 pounds per foot. The chain is ideal for use with all types of motorcycles.

  • Save on fuel costs. By reducing drag and corrosion, a good motorcycle chain allows for a smooth ride, which reduces fuel consumption. A smooth-running motorcycle makes more efficient use of power.

  • Spare parts are always available. Chains and sprockets often work in tandem to transfer power to the rear wheel. The constant demand for chains and sprockets results in a steady supply of replacement parts.

Types of motorcycle chains

O-Ring

O-rings Motorcycle chains have an O-ring between the inner roller cover and outer link cover of each link. This is a common feature on motocross bikes because it keeps the chain dirt-free. o-rings ensure that factory-applied lubricant stays between the pin and the plate. The chain remains lubricated and grit, dirt and other contaminants do not enter the links.

X-Ring

X-ring motorcycle chains are more efficient than O-ring chains, which is why they are perfect for the charged environment of the track. One of the advantages of X-ring chains over O-ring chains is that they make better use of lubrication. This feature makes them easy to maintain and perfect for new motorcycles.

Non-Sealed

You will find non-sealed motorcycle chains on most older motorcycles. Although they are cheaper than O-ring and X-ring chains, there are not too many on the market. One of their major drawbacks is that they are not easy to maintain. You will spend a lot of money on maintenance costs every year.

What does 525 mean on a motorcycle chain?

Chain size is in inches, the three digit number used to describe the chain size is based on the "rule of eights". The first digit is for chain pitch. This is the distance between the pins. The second and third digits combine for roller width, with a decimal point inserted between the second and third digits.

For example, a 420 chain has a pitch of 4/8" = 1/2" (12.70mm) and a roller width of 2.0/8" = 1/4" (6.35mm).

A 525 chain (the size my bike uses) has a pitch of 5/8" (15.88mm) and a roller width of 2.5/8" (7.94mm).

A 530 chain has a pitch of 5/8" (15.88mm) and a roller width of 3.0/8" (9.52mm).
